Sitting atop a hill in the Álava province of the Basque County is the breathtaking medieval village of Laguardia. Since it's only a short 20-minute drive from Logroño, we always suggest that everyone spend at least a day there. Here are some of things you can't miss both in the heart of the village and in the surrounding areas.
Take a walk
When you arrive in Laguardia, you'll find a few entrances to the walled-in village. You'll find picturesque cobblestone streets lined with bars, restaurants, wineries and hotels.
In the main plaza, there's a clock that has a show everyday at various times on the hour. You can find more information here.
Take a short walk to the mirador to take some amazing photos. We recently took a group there and got some good group shots in this spot.

There's a path that goes around the entire village that you can easily walk in less than an hour. Then you can take the Panoramic Elevator down, cross the street and take a walk in the vineyards. There's a beautiful Laguna that you can take a walk around and it is especially beautiful in summer.

The wine
Laguardia is in the heart of Rioja Alavesa, a part of the Rioja wine region that includes the Álava province of the Basque Country, the La Rioja autonomous community and parts of Navarra, another neighboring autonomous community.
This means that there are several great wineries that you can visit whether that be for a glass of wine or a proper winery tour. Here are a few picks both in the heart of the village and on the outskirts:
Bodega El Fabulista

If you're looking to tour a winery right in the center of the town, Fabulista is where you'll want to go. There are over 300 underground wine cellars in the heart of Laguardia and Fabulista is one of them!
Just outside of the town centre sits Ysios, a winery that is well-known for its unique architecture, Bodegas Campillo and Eguren Ugarte.
Where to eat
Finding something to eat all depends on your budget. If you're looking to save money, grabbing a few pinchos would be best. You'll find pinchos at many different bars around the center of the city.
If you're looking for more of a sit-down experience, I have two recommendations that are just outside of the town center. Villa Lucía has an amazing restaurant and a wine museum. La Huerta Vieja is another good option.
Where to stay
Just outside of the village center next to Villa Lucía sits Hotel Villa Laguardia. They have an amazing spa that you can eperience whether you're staying there or not.
Hotel Hospedería de Los Parajes is another nice option if you have a bit of a bigger buget. This hotel sits right in the town square, so I don't think you could be any more centrally-located. It has an amazing restaurant and spa as well.
Have you been to Laguardia?
